Paw Paw (Asimina triloba)

This deciduous tree produces a sweet yellowish-green fruit from the same family as cherimoya and custard apples.  The fruit can be eaten raw or used in desserts or jams.

Pawpaw trees are a host plant for the larvae of the zebra swallowtail butterfly.  The leaves and bark contain a neurotoxin that protects the butterflies throughout their lifecycle by making them unpalatable to predators.
