Burial Shrouds

About Our Botanically-Dyed Burial Shrouds

Our burial shrouds are hand-dyed with local Michigan plants on natural fiber that readily breaks and returns to the Earth. We try to use recycled fiber whenever possible to further limit environmental impact, and we partner with local organizations to gather cotton and linen textiles that can be sewn into shrouds. We grow most of the plants we use on our farm, and also sometimes incorporate leaves, bark, and flowers from more problematic plants that were harvested in volunteer restoration efforts from public land. Our goal is to move beyond “sustainable,” ensuring each basket leaves our local ecology healthier and more resilient. A portion of the proceeds for each funerary vessel purchased is donated to the Watershed Council (or a similar environmental organization) local to the shroud’s final resting place.

Dye Your Own Shroud

We also welcome individuals and their loves ones to be involved in the dye process. You are welcome to come by our farm while the shroud is being crafted. You can choose what plants on our farm to include or even bring along leaves and flowers from your own backyard or other special places. We strongly believe that crafting funerary vessels can be a powerful and healing part of grieving journeys for all involved. No dye experience is required.

For those who would like to stay at our farm while weaving or dyeing, we have a private 1-bedroom apartment available above our barn that is easily accessible by an electronic stair lift.
