Description: Learn to weave with willow and other other plants!  At the end of the class, you’ll take home a woven round-base gathering basket and the skills to make more.

In this workshop, we’ll discuss old western and northern European willow tradition, including how to harvest, sort, dry, soak, and mellow willow.  We’ll also talk about what other plants can be used in this type of basketry, including common “invasive” species.  This will equip you with a wonderful foundation so that you can continue experimenting with weaving on your own, if you so choose. If time and weather permit, we’ll also go out to our willow field to meet the willow and see a harvesting, sorting, and planting demonstration.

Weaving is one of humankind’s most ancient crafts.  After this class, you’ll never look at a basket the same way again.  This class will develop the skills to make a traditional round-bottom willow basket.  We will learn to make a slath, two-rod twine/pair, stake up, 3-rod wale, french rand, and finish with a basket border along and handles of your choice.

This class is well-suited for beginners and intermediate weavers, ages 12+.  Overnight accommodations available for a small extra fee upon request.
